Mortal Engines

By Phillip Reeve

Overview: The plot and whole premise of Municipal Darwinism was actually super interesting. It was crazy to think about how that works and the worldbuilding was actually really good. I did not like the way it was written, however, (see the My Thoughts section) but I would recommend it to people grades seven and up. There’s some murdering and violence and such, but nothing too hard to handle. The writing is pretty simple, not to complicated.

What’s it about? The great traction city London has been skulking in the hills to avoid the bigger, faster, hungrier cities loose in the Great Hunting Ground. But now that the city has access to an ancient and terrible technology, the sinister plans of Lord Mayor Magnus Crome can finally unfold.

My thoughts: I didn’t enjoy the writing quality relative to other books I’ve read. The plot was interesting, but I didn’t feel like the way it was written did the creative premise justice. I wasn’t really gripped by the language and found myself bored even through the exciting plot. The characters felt super flat, none of them had a drive to do anything really, expect for one or two missions they had in life and that was it.
