Eragon

By Christopher Paolini

Book One Cover

Overview: I’d recommend this book to dragon fans or people who enjoyed Harry Potter. It’s a fast paced adventure that will keep you turning pages until the end! People grades seven and up would enjoy this book. It definitely has a higher reading level though, and every time a character speaks they go into a long monologue. The writing is overly wordy and there is a whole lot of violence and descriptions of gory injuries.

What’s it about? Eragon is a lowly citizen in an obscure town. When he finds a shiny blue rock in the wild one day, he brings it home and discovers that its a dragon egg! Suddenly, he finds himself involved in a war to take back his oppressed country from an evil tyrant, with the help of his new dragon companion.

My thoughts: It was very high high fantasy. It’s got all the classic magical creatures and the whole tone to the book felt very… classic. It’s almost like Paolini was trying way too hard to write a fantasy book instead of just focused on writing quality, three dimensional characters and plotlines. Even if it gets boring and stereotypical in parts, it’s still entertaining.
